Description

RAT is a mobile application that makes New York City restaurant inspection data easier to discover and understand. Built around NYC Department of Health inspection data, the application surfaces restaurant inspection history and violations in a format designed for quick, practical use. The name RAT has a deliberate double meaning. To “rat” on something is to expose information that might otherwise go unnoticed—in this case, sanitation and food-safety violations. It also references one of the most recognizable restaurant sanitation concerns: evidence of rodents. The application is built with Expo and React Native using TypeScript, with a Node.js and Express backend and PostgreSQL persistence. It integrates NYC DOH data, Google OAuth, and local device persistence to provide a mobile-first experience for searching and reviewing restaurant health information.
